Its name comes from the old bridge over the Lima River, that gives an access to the town, with its 15 big stone arcs, which 4 of them still belong to the original Roman construction.
Ponte de Lima is located on the Miño River, near the two big urban centres, Viana do Castelo and Braga, having near 2.800 inhabitants. It?s the main population of a city council that has an area of 352 km2 , approximately, subdivided in 51 parishes. The city council borders to the North with Paredes de Coura, to the East with Arcos de Valdevez and Ponte da Barca, to the South East with Vila Verde, to the South with Barcelos, to the West with Viana do Castelo and Caminha, and to the North East with Vila Nova de Cerqueira.
It's main characteristic is that it's an area with a strong touristic impact, due to its medieval architecture and to its background, flown by the wonderful Lima River.
The patrimony is everywhere. In every walk, we encounter the rests of the ?castros? (fortresses set on a hill) and the romanization, with a milician frame, with a milestone, an arms? stone, Romanic churches, "petos de ánimas" (little chapels set on paths used to pray), Baroque buildings and several vestiges that show the antiquity of Ponte de Lima, from the prehistory to the modern age.
In this city council, the green, with a thousand of tones, is a reality that allows us to admire amazing and unique scenes. Tematic gardens, creeks, rivers and calm places to enjoy and relax, among which we can highlight the Protected Area of Lagoas de Bertiandos and S. Pedro de Arcos. These are the best places for the inhabitants of Ponte de Lima and for the people that travels through this town.
Ponte de Lima has never forgotten its traditions, the craftwork, the gastronomy, the fairs and feasts (the most popular are the Feiras Novas, Vaca das Cordas, Serrada da Velha and Queima do Judas, appart from a lot more). These celebrations, along with the legends and beliefs of people, have resulted in a very important and popular culture, that has placed Ponte de Lime in an unique and important place.
The cultural tourism, the ?room tourism? (accommodation in a room of a private house with very important architectural, historical and artistic features), environment tourism and rural tourism are excellent visiting cards for the people that make use of it and, at the same time, the town is very pleased to introduce.
Ponte de Lima has a very significative number of places for accommodation, mostly tourism private houses, that represent, this way, the best offer in Portugal. That is the reason why Porgugal is considered de capital of this kind of tourism, which is developed in 3 categories: agrotourism, room tourism and rural tourism.
It has a touristic trail, with some signs placed along the wall, main monuments and examples of good architecture, allowing the tourists to gain a general knowledge of the town and its patrimony. These signs have 2 maps, one with the general trail and the other with some details of it that peoples should follow to get the next sign.
The beauty of the landscape, the richness of the patrimony and the people hospitality have turned Ponte de Lima in one of the most desired place for the tourists.
Besides, some quality infrastructures have been created, complementing and constituting a strong factor for the tourism, as the Golf Course, the Equine Centre of Calvelo, the Equestrian Centre, near Ponte de Lima, on the edge of the river, and the Nautical Club that has increased the practice of the nautical sports, making benefits from the hydric ressources.
This region, mainly touristic, presents a quality offer in the hotel business, mainly restaurants in which it's possible to enjoy the typical gastronomy, highlighting the sarrabulho and the la lamprey, accompanied by white green and red wine, produced in the town and adding the traditional pastry. All these ressources are joined with the patrimony, the ethnographic one, that includes the typical and authentic folklore and the craftwork.
We shouldn?t forget the Path to Santiago as an important element for the tourism of the region, not only for the council, but also for the region above the Miño. This section of the path, that belongs to the "Portuguese Path to Santiago", goes through Ponte de Lima, and constitutes one of the old routes of pilgrimage.
Apart from the tourism, the economic activity of the region is based on the agriculture, mainly the smal lholding. The cattle raising also has an important place in this region. In this region, the population is dense and the use of the ground is very intense. We are before a strongly humanized lanscape, without forgetting the presence of a natural vegetation, constituted mainly by autochthonous species. It's ecologic characteristic is due, mainly, to the specificity of the water flows.
With respecto to the industrial net, Ponte de Lima has made an effort to create specific incentives for the stablishment of industries, mostly non-pollution industries. Foreseeing the creation of some industrial estates, the Industrial Estate of Gemieira has started its activity.
Traditionally, the extractive industry, despite of having little representativeness in this region, has been constituted by little companies that operate with sand, clay and granite. It?s a sector with a tendency to increase, if we consider the high demand of the region granite, inside and outside Portugal.
With a young population, Ponte de Lima has a very important universitary centre, with 2 superior education centres and a very important tradition in the field of the agricultural research: Fernando Pessoa University, Ponte de Lima Superior Agrarian School and the Professional School of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ponte de Lima.
